Special Citation for the Creative Use of Layers of Lighting Niches
The design called for carefully integrating and concealing lighting within the architecture. The traditional use of decorative fixtures was avoided to fully showcase the space. Asymmetric luminaries concealed at the base of each clerestory window highlight window wells and uplight the barrel-vault ceiling. Track lighting mounted at 35 ft with PAR38 and ARIII spots is used throughout for general seating illumination and accent light. The ARIIIs and concealed dimmable fluorescents make the 12,000-pound shrines appear as if they’re floating. A crucifix is accented with theatrical ellipsoidals and uplighted by fluorescent strips, while a 100-ft-high dome is illuminated by IR halogen uplights at the base of the windows. Full Article
