Situated near Waikiki Beach, this outdoor mall is the largest open-air shopping center in the world. Periodic phases of renovation and expansion over time resulted in a massive cluster of retailers without a consistent identity. The design team was tasked with creating a unifying identity for the existing mall’s renovation and for a new 650,000sf expansion.
Custom decorative fixtures drew inspiration from traditional Hawaiian baskets, drums, and torches, and they unify the entire mall under a single design language. Warm layers of decorative and landscape lighting typical of a Hawaiian beachfront were carefully balance with more functional architectural lighting typical of a retail environment.
