LEED/SUSTAINABLE LIGHTING DESIGN

Long before sustainability become a catch phrase, Lighting Design Alliance was designing with energy-efficient sources, harvesting daylight and advocating a good lighting environment in our projects. With several LEED® Accredited Professionals on staff, and experience on many LEED® projects, Lighting Design Alliance is well equipped to partner with you on your next sustainable project.

Lighting Design Alliance has a commitment to energy efficient design. Our designs consistently emphasize low maintenance, long lamp life, low lighting power density, and design sensibility. We want our designs to save the client money, but still be beautiful. Our goal is to articulate the architecture while providing a sustainable and efficient design.

It is important to the firm that all employees be proficient in LEED® project certification and knowledgeable of applicable energy codes nationwide. We have several LEED® accredited professionals on staff, and Lighting Design Alliance provides the resources and education required for all design staff to pursue LEED® accreditation.

In the last 15 years Lighting Design Alliance has worked on numerous projects that have included sustainable design on multiple levels. We are a sustaining member of the US Green Building Council and have several LEED® accredited professionals in the office.

LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE OFFICE IN LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA

In August 2008, we moved to a custom designed low carbon footprint office. With 100% daylight in working areas, photovoltaic panels and solar hot water panels, active sun tracking skylights and active daylight monitoring systems, daylight fiber-optic systems, electric lighting with full dimming and daylight harvesting capabilities and exterior solar shutters. The building is a testing laboratory to evaluate all of the latest lighting technology in a real world condition. This building has a total lighting power density of 0.1 watts/sq. ft. It is registered for and pursuing LEED certification. We are pursuing multiple patents on the various lighting technologies included in the building. Working in this environment reminds us at all times the benefits of such designs and encourages us to be mindful of the same for the other projects we design.

Sustainable Projects

In the mid 80s, we were one of the first to introduce corporate clients like Disney to the benefit of energy efficient lighting in their resort projects. This commitment is still used today to provide our clients with the best proven technology possible. All projects designed by LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE promise the following:

i. Create productive, aesthetic spaces for all guests
ii. Energy efficiency
iii. Emphasizing good environments by the use of higher color rendering lamps
iv. Minimizing glare and flicker
v. Reducing environmental pollution by using low pollution lamps.
vi. Reduce maintenance by using minimal number of lamp types, while proving lighting that is sympathetic and an integral part of the architecture.

The newest applicable technology in the form of lamp developments and technology are automatically a part of every design. This includes the use of high color rendering ceramic metal halides and fluorescents, LEDs and energy saving ballasts and control systems. Some sustainable designs are listed below:

DISNEY WILDERNESS LODGE

This project is over 15 years old, but it was the first hospitality project to use compact fluorescent technology in the public areas.

SILVER LEGACY HOTEL & CASINO

This project is over 15 years old, but it was the first new casino to integrate recessed downlights with optical control. Multiple circuitry allowed for several moods without adding the extreme costs of dimming ballast.

PLAYA VISTA DEVELOPMENT MASTER PLAN

Many aspects of environmentally conscious design were utilized while developing the lighting for the master plan, and the first two buildings on the campus. The environmentally sensitive design took into account night glow and bird flight patterns. Parcel 3, in design phase, is aiming for LEED® Gold.

CALIFORNIA STATE CAPITOL BUILDING ROTUNDA DESIGN

Lighting Design Alliance attended a multi-disciplinary charette at the Rocky Mountain Institute and came up with solutions that reduced the overall energy consumption by 40% and increased light levels while maintaining the historic character of the building.

CALEPA STATE HEADQUARTERS, SACRAMENTO

The project utilized state of the art lighting technology to reduce energy consumption. Multiple calculations and renderings in the design stages ensured that the project objectives were easily understood by the end users. The CalEPA project was the first LEED® certified interior project in the State of California.

GLORIETTA BAY MASTERPLAN, CORONADO

LDA’s scope of work included outside and interior lighting for the civic center, the city hall and the surrounding park. The lighting power requirements are 10% lower than allowed by California Title 24. The project utilizes advanced daylighting techniques to eliminate the use of electrical lighting during sunlight hours while improving employee morale and productivity. Daylight and occupancy sensors are an integral part of the lighting design.

VIRGINIA AVENUE PARK, SANTA MONICA

The renovation of this public park is LEED® Silver certified with outdoor and indoor lighting meeting all LEED® standards. Outdoor lighting is full cut-off, eliminating sky-glow and any light trespass on adjacent properties. Extensive use of full range dimming and occupancy sensors indoors allows the lighting to better Title 24 requirements by 10%, while meeting all required lighting standards.

LAKE VIEW LIBRARY AND SUN VALLEY LIBRARY, GREATER LOS ANGELES AREA

The project included daylighting integration and specialty controls

FONTANA LIBRARY AND RESOURCE TECHNOLOGY CENTER

A Savings by Design project, this library has been designed in a way to minimize energy consumption by daylight harvesting, advanced lighting controls and the use of energy efficient sources and components.

LOS ANGELES AREA COLLEGES

LEED® based design recommendations and design for LA Southwest College, LA Mission College, LA Harbor College and Crofton Hills College.

WASHINGTON MUTUAL OFFICE TOWER, SEATTLE

A 1,000,000 sq. ft. 40-floor office building, this project involves the use of the latest lamp and ballast technology and daylight controls to reduce wattage to less than 0.8 watts/sq. ft., while keeping lighting costs to below $3.00/sq. ft.

EXELON CORPORATION, CHICAGO

220,000 sq. ft. of office space, LEED® Platinum compliant.

POTTERY BARN, WEST ELM AND WILLIAM SONOMA RETAIL STORES

Parent-company Williams Sonoma has retained Lighting Design Alliance for retrofit design of a number of their Pottery Barn and West Elm retail stores across the United States. We have been able to reduce overall energy consumption by 60% while maintaining the required visual criteria and light levels similar to the original design.

COLE HAAN

Energy-efficient design of new factory outlet stores included lifecycle cost studies. We were able to achieve a 60% reduction in wattage compared to a typical Halogen design.

UCSD PRICE CENTER EXPANSION

The UCSD Price Center Expansion added more than 170,000 square feet to the existing student center facilities, providing new spaces for retail, dining, meetings, events, student organizations, and other campus services while meeting LEED Silver standards.
