Before this exterior podium renovation, it was easy to drive by the LAX Hilton on Century Boulevard without noticing the simple 1980’s architecture and improvised lighting. The long porte cochere did not make much more of an impression, and the perimeter sidewalks were mostly unlit and uninviting. With this transformative renovation, the smooth, spartan concrete and stucco finishes were replaced with texture and variety in tone and sheen. Faceted panels clad the walls, with grazing lights to emphasize their dimensionality. Larger faceted shapes were used at the ceiling, with halo lights for a floating effect. These larger panels were also used on the exterior podium facade with a pinstripe of light creating a lightning bolt across the width of the building. The most dynamic new addition is the nine giant RGBW color-changing columns on the facade. Architectural in form during the day, each column can have its body and top individually addressed for seasonal or whimsical lighting effects every night. Operations easily selects color combinations from a set list or creates on the spot programs.
